The rapid uptake of telehealth services to stop the spread of coronavirus is adding impetus to research to develop innovative new ways of diagnosing and monitoring patients with eye disease. As the COVID-19 pandemic has spurred Australia's health care practitioners to replace many routine face-to-face appointments with phone or video consultations – telehealth has moved into the mainstream. CERA researchers are leading major projects to develop innovative new diagnostic tools that can be used in the home or outside of traditional eye clinic settings. They predict the shift to telehealth services will continue to gather pace after the COVID-19 pandemic has ended. CERA Deputy Director Associate Professor Peter van Wijngaarden is leading research to develop a simple eye test to detect the early signs Alzheimer's disease.


Embracing and managing AI in the eye care workplace

AI solutions company Visulytix* has developed an eye care analysis tool that is being rolled out to selected institutions around the world – both for clinical use and to support investigational studies. The long-anticipated benefits of AI will surely be a game changer for the screening and care of conditions such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy (conditions that, collectively, affect 500 million people worldwide), but how can AI systems be successfully managed? Whilst such systems are likely to attract much fanfare, they must be evaluated quantitatively, as well as for their ability to work'out of the box' and in diverse clinical environments. Eye care professionals such as ophthalmologists and optometrists will be required to embrace the technology and understand, at least at a general level, some of the technical and statistical terms that may be used in product documentation and performance. These include such terminology as sensitivity, specificity and accuracy.


Deep Learning Models Classify Disease From Medical Imaging

THURSDAY, Sept. 26, 2019 (HealthDay News) -- Early evidence suggests that diagnostic performance of deep learning models is equivalent to that of health care professionals for interpreting medical imaging, according to a study published online Sept. 25 in The Lancet Digital Health. Xiaoxuan Liu, M.B.Ch.B., from the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom, and colleagues conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the diagnostic accuracy of deep learning algorithms versus health care professionals in classifying disease using medical imaging. Binary diagnostic accuracy data were extracted and contingency tables were constructed to derive the outcomes of interest: sensitivity and specificity. Data from 82 studies, describing 147 patient cohorts were included. The researchers found that based on 69 studies, sensitivity ranged from 9.7 to 100 percent and specificity ranged from 38.9 to 100 percent.

Paediatric and child trauma experts are sounding the alarm that separating migrant children from their parents at the US border can cause serious physical and psychological damage. As more stories emerge about children being separated from their parents at the border between Mexico and the US, doctors and scientists are warning that there could be long-term, irreversible health impacts on children if they're not reunited expediently. The head of the American Academy of Pediatrics went so far as to call the policy "child abuse" and against "everything we stand for as paediatricians". "This is completely ridiculous and I'm approaching that not as someone who's taking a position in the politics, but as a scientist," says Charles A Nelson III, a professor of paediatrics and neuroscience at Harvard Medical School. "We just know the science does not support that this is good for kids."
